Structure and Dynamics of an Old-Growth Pine-Oak Community of the Southern Appalachians, Georgia, U.S.A

چکیده
disturbance was ice storms, which generally resulted in suppression of radial growth in pines and increased radial growth in oaks. Additionally, pulses of understory establishment coincided with major ice storms. The lack of understory disturbance such as fire may be allowing the establishment of shade tolerant understory species while limiting the establishment of pine and oak. Canopy disturbance from ice storms may be accelerating the pace of this compositional shift. Under the current disturbance regime, composition of the preserve is likely to change, leading to an increase in red maple and mockernut hickory and a decline in pine and oak species.

Fire Ecology and Fire Management in the Southern Appalachians: Rationale for and Effects of Prescribed Fire
Fire suppression in the Southern Appalachians has led to changes in forests dominated by yellow pine (Pinus subgenus pinus) and oak (Quercus) species. Recently, management agencies have begun to prescribe fire with the aim of restoring pre-suppression conditions. Here, I examine the use of prescribed fire in the Southern Appalachians from two perspectives. First, I review the values and goals t...
متن کاملStand restoration burning in oak–pine forests in the southern Appalachians: effects on aboveground biomass and carbon and nitrogen cycling
Understory prescribed burning is being suggested as a viable management tool for restoring degraded oak–pine forest communities in the southern Appalachians yet information is lacking on how this will affect ecosystem processes. Our objectives in this study were to evaluate the watershed scale effects of understory burning on total aboveground biomass, and the carbon and nitrogen pools in coars...
متن کاملEffects of Restoration Burns on Macroinvertebrates in Southern Appalachian Pine-Oak Forests
Cover board arrays were used to measure the relative abundance of macroinvertebrates and terrestrial salamanders on prescribed burn and control sites in xeric southern Appalachians of northern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee pine-oak forests. Three microsite variables were measured at each cover board: cover board moisture level, temperature under the cover board, and soil moisture. Soil moi...
متن کاملPersonal Mastery and All-Cause Mortality among Older Americans Living with Diabetes
Introduction: Higher personal mastery is associated with better physical functioning, wellbeing, and longevity among older populations. However, few studies have focused on whether personal mastery is protective against mortality among older adults living with diabetes over time. Methods: A total of 1,779 participants were identified from an off-year survey of the Health and Retirement Study....
متن کاملLong-Term Soil Responses to Site Preparation Burning in the Southern Appalachians
The mixed oak-pine ecosystems in the southern Appalachians are in decline because of a combination of drought and southern pine-beetle infestation. A commonly applied prescription for restoration of these degraded sites has been to fell all vegetation, allow it to dry, and conduct a site-preparation burn. However, there is little information on the midand long-term influences of this prescripti...
